  • Short Documentary Kuda Kepang Short Documentary

Kuda kepang is famous in Johore especially in Batu Pahat. Since my group have chosen this topic, we need to go to the 'crime scene' to investigate the real case.

On Friday night, 9pm, we departed from UIA to Putra LRT. We take Komuter at KL Sentral to get to Port Klang because Hisham red Kancil was there. We took our dinner before we start our journey at 1am. Its already Saturday. Hisham take the wheel while I'm assisting him to read the signboards and look for direction. Its hard to resist sleepiness in the middle of the night but I have to because I need to respect the driver. I also hate it when I'm driving while my passengers' sleeping.

We entered the highway from Nilai and we take the exit at Tangkak. From there, we look for Muar, Batu Pahat and I pay more attention for Semerah and Sungai Nibong. That's where our 'suspect' live. Around 5am, we take a nap at Crocodile's Nest Mosque a.k.a Masjid Sarang Buaya. Just a quick nap before the Subuh prayer.

We have our breakfast at food court near Pasar Awam Semerah. We finally arrived at Mr. Naim Marjani's residents. He's among the craftsmen of kuda kepang. We conduct an interview with him. But the funny part is, during the interview, we are very sleepy. Its not that we were boring listening to his story, but unfortunately we don't have enough sleep the night before. We decided to leave his house to sleep at the former mosque. We told him that we have some items left.. what an excuse!

Around 1pm we went to his house and they prepared lunch for us. Actually, on the same day, Library of Batu Pahat was having a edu-visit to Wak Naim house to watch the kuda kepang performance. That's why we choose that day for our research because I need some visual as well as videos for our documentary project. The event started at 3pm and ended around 5.30pm.

    Some interesting facts.
    • During kuda kepang performance, some of the dancers will be possessed by a kuda kepang spirit and when they are unconscious, they will act strangely. That's very terrifying but its true!
    • We also had an opportunity to learn some of the basic dance step in kuda kepang dance. Its very easy but carrying the leather made horse puppet is giving me some ache!

Our journey home... We went to Batu Pahat city and take the highway from Yong Peng. We had our dinner at highway lay by, RnR Pagoh and we also had some durians! I take the wheel from there and finally, we arrived at UIA around 1.30am.

Its a whole day full of excitement despite our lack of sleep and of course its very tiring. I've got a lot of information about kuda kepang and let's see how can I reveal the mystic and mysteries in my documentary later.

P/S – its my first time been in Johore!

  • Cubic Dwelling

This is solely an interior design project. Student were given a cubicle space with measurement of 6x6x6 metres and we need to design the interior of that given space. The basic requirement are living room, kitchen, dining room, bathroom and bedroom.

Its the most challenging project because with the time restriction, we need to produce good design with drawings and scale model.

  • Pottery Making & Restoration of Ceramics

This project exposes students with the world of conservation. But, its a very surface exposure. That's why at the end of the semester, most students doesn't choose conservation as their future majoring.

There are two parts of it. First, students were exposed to pottery making techniques such as coiling, press molding and slabbing as well as throwing technique.

Second part of it is the restoration of ceramics. Students need to get any ceramic objects either it was broken or not, then we need to restore it as it should be.

  • Corrugated Board Seating

This is mainly another industrial design project.

Almost every design school will have this program for their students.

We need to find used corrugated boards and design creatively on how it can be used as a single seater.

Its a group work and I worked with Najwa Halim and Hidayah.

    Our concept is 'Maple Leaf'.

  • Visual Art

Students need to design a glass panel for CBE.

Its a final project but its not very challenging.

We glad we were exposed to the glass materials and sandblasting technique.

  • Light & Darkness

Another industrial design project. Students need to design a light fitting by selecting any of these themes: Nature, Ethnic, Emotion and Futuristic.

I've chosen the 'Ethnic' theme and I've decided to study on the Middle East lamp style.

Its a bit tough for me because from my lecturers point of view, Middle East was usually associated with exotic items. That why my design should reflect the exoticness.

  • Experimental Band

Its the best project ever in my life.

Luckily, most of my group members have passion in music and its not a big deal to teach them music and to perform harmoniously.

We even won the 'Overall Best' award.

Watch some of the videos online at youtube.com

Besides, we also were invited to perform at a dinner.

  • Mixed Media Sculptural Painting

Design a sculptural painting and mixed some media onto it. Try to compose them creatively, based on three main theme: Nature, Proverb and Childhood.

I've chosen 'Proverb' and I've selected the traditional Malay proverb which is 'Sepandai-pandai tupai melompat, akhirnya jatuh ke tanah juga'. The meaning as in english is, no matter how good your commited your wrongdoing, at one point, you'll get busted. Isn't it true?

Yea.. but I think its not a very successfull one..

  • Pavilion for MCIIUM

Its the real project. Designing a pavilion for MCIIUM? Yeah.. its only for the sake of design. Not meant to be built.

My concept is a car. From the facade, we can trace a shape of a car.

Anyway, its not a very successfull one.

  • Bird's Watching Enclosure

Its kinda another industrial design project.

Design an enclosure which can fit a single person. No exageration as its one of the Islamic value. Using corrugated board which is recyclable and its environmentally friendly.

The best thing after we've spent money for this project, we have to dump it. Anyway, to make it memorable, my group mate, A. Danial and I slammed and smacked down the enclosure after the viewing session finished.
